Dentures
Dentures are acrylic teeth which replace natural teeth and gives support to the jaws and surrounding structures of the mouth. Typically dentures are made in one of two ways. All the teeth are extracted and once the gums have healed the dentures are made and fitted. Or the dentures are fitted at the same time as the extractions and the tissue heals underneath the dentures.
The upper or top dentures usually have a flesh colored plate that covers the roof of the mouth or the natural palate. The lower denture is shaped like a horseshoe because the tongue needs room to move.
Over a period of time as the mouth ages, its shape changes. The dentures have to be maintained to fit the mouth or the alignment looks out of place. Once dentures have been fitted the patient will still need regular dentist check-ups to check for disease and wear and tear. We usually recommend one visit per year for our denture patients.
